Ten years ago, the Hub of Heaven Community Garden was an empty lot on the corner of 28th Ave and 26th St in South Minneapolis. Neighbors turned it into a community garden with scavanged wood pallets, a big load of dirt, and lots of hard work. Our neighbor, Brian Major, contributed his water spigot and a hose, and about 20 neighbors planted their gardens for $20 each. Through the years we have added 4 compost bins donated by the City, an information kiosk, another load of dirt, a community plot for rhubarb and herbs, and a great water system designed and executed by Bernie Weibel. The 32 plots are all occupied, most with vegetables and some with flowers. The latest addition to the Hub of Heaven is this website for garden registrations and information sharing. The City of Minneapolis is in the process of selling the lot to the Hub of Heaven for $1, which has prompted the addition of a Steering Group of gardeners who are sharing the administrative and creative work for the garden.
